The asymmetry in this decision is one of the cleanest in the corpus: the worst plausible outcome from taking a rideshare home is a $30 fare and the inconvenience of retrieving your car the next morning, while the worst plausible outcome from driving after drinking is a fatal crash, a DUI conviction that NHTSA estimates can run upwards of $10,000 in attorney’s fees, fines, court costs, and higher insurance, plus license loss and possible jail, or the lifelong regret of having killed someone.
