The fear of a sudden mechanical failure — brakes giving out on a hill, a tire blowout on the highway — is vivid and cinematic. Vehicle inspection programs exist in roughly half of US states, and their political justification rests on the assumption that uninspected vehicles pose a meaningful crash risk. Modern vehicles have more electronic safety systems (ABS, ESC, TPMS) that may have reduced the vehicle-factor share. Conversely, the average age of vehicles on US roads has increased to ~12.6 years, which works in the opposite direction.
