Pick challenger
A genuinely alcohol-free beer is the reassuring end of this category, and US labeling law is unusually blunt about it. Under the TTB’s rules, “alcohol free” and a “0.0%” claim mean the product contains no alcohol at all, with no tolerance permitted, and a malt beverage may not carry a 0.0% figure unless it also qualifies as alcohol free. A product that actually meets that standard has nothing to transfer to a fetus or into breastmilk, which is why this entry carries no harm number: the probability of harm from a literally-zero dose is not a meaningful thing to measure. The useful question is not “how dangerous is the alcohol in a 0.0% beer” but “how confident can anyone be that the 0.0% is real.”
That confidence rests on how the number was produced. Most alcohol figures on beer come from density measurement, which is cheap and works well at ordinary strengths but becomes unreliable near zero, because sugars, dissolved carbon dioxide, and other solutes push the density around in the same range as the last traces of ethanol. Gas chromatography, which detects ethanol directly down to roughly 0.005% by volume, tells a less tidy story. A 1980 analysis found beverages labeled “alcohol-free” holding between 0.009% and 0.385% ethanol by volume; a 2010 Motherisk study found six products claiming to contain no alcohol testing above 1%. Put on the standard-drink scale, where a US drink is 14 grams of ethanol, the 0.385% upper end works out to about 1.1 grams in a 12-ounce serving, roughly a thirteenth of a drink and about the same as a “non-alcoholic” beer, while the 1% products reach around 2.8 grams, a fifth of a drink. The low end, 0.009%, is around a five-hundredth of a drink and genuinely negligible. The single label “contains no alcohol” has, in testing, spanned that entire range.
None of this makes a verified-zero beer risky; it makes the label the thing to check rather than trust by default. Two practical distinctions follow. “De-alcoholized” describes a process, not a strength, and on its own it permits up to 0.5% by volume, so it is not the same claim as “0.0%” — the sibling entry NA beer while pregnant covers that under-0.5% class. And a brand that confirms zero by chromatography has a stronger claim to the label than one that estimates it by density. The major obstetric bodies hold that no amount of alcohol is established as safe in pregnancy; for a genuinely alcohol-free product that guidance and the dose do not conflict, because there is no dose. The honest summary is that a true 0.0% is essentially exposure-free and the safest option in the category, that “0.0%” is a claim about a measurement rather than a guarantee, and that the only documented, quantified catch is how often that particular claim has failed an independent assay.
